Akshay Kumar’s fight with the real problem of menstrual hygiene!

Akshay Kumar is all set to educate the masses on menstruation in his latest outing, PadMan. The movie, which is directed by R. Balki and produced by Twinkle Khanna’s Mrs. Funnybones Productions also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor. PadMan is based on Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor of low-cost sanitary napkins for women in rural areas.

The filmmakers have come up with an innovative poster in which Akshay Kumar has cotton in his hand. On the poster, you will see many words written on it like Fighter, Genius, Innovation, Unreal Man, No Shame, Real Problem and Passion.

At the song launch, Akshay said, “With Toilet: Ek Prem Katha we had shown it (film) on Doordarshan channel, the government is also doing a good job by taking the film in a pen-drive and showing it in villages so that more people can see the film and understand it. We will do something similar for PadMan. Our aim is not to earn money through the film but it should reach more people, more places where it is needed. We will also take the help of the government.”

Twinkle also added, “We would want the film to be shown to school girls and principals, so it penetrates where it has to. At least we are hoping a conversation starts where the same girls, who can’t afford a sanitary pad, would say to their parents that we don’t need fairness creams, we need sanitary pads so that we can go to schools.”

Talking about the statistics of women NOT using sanitary pads, Akshay said, “With this subject (menstrual hygiene) we got to know that 82 per cent women don’t use sanitary pads and with the help of everyone including the government, we hope the numbers come down.”

Earlier, in an interview with a leading daily, when Akshay was asked about starring in a movie which delves with the topic of menstruation, the actor stated, “If you change nothing, nothing will change. It’s not about being bold, but about breaking taboos that hold us back. I have lived with women all my life, yet I have learnt more about the topic while making this film than ever before. I do not mind who I offend or whose stomach I turn by being bold, this is not the Stone Age; menstruating is natural.”

PadMan is scheduled to release on January 26, 2018.
