Sharad navratri dedicates three days each for the worship of three forms of Maa Shakti – Goddess Durga (first three days), Goddess Lakshmi (fourth to sixth day) and Goddess Saraswati (last three days).

Navaratri Day 5 – Maa Skandmata: Significance, Incarnation, Legend and Celebration!

On the fifth day (Panchami), Skandamata, the goddess worshiped, who is the mother of Skand (or Kartikeya). She is symbol of mother’s power and strength to save her son.

Maa Skandmata’s Appearance, Portrayal and Weapons:

Skanda Mata got married to Shiva. They gave birth to a son named “Skanda”. The word “Skanda” means leader of the army of gods.

Skanda Mata is known as the deity of fire. The idol of Skanda Mata seated in a lotus comes with three eyes and four hands.

She is portrayed riding a ferocious lion, having four arms, and holding her baby. Skanda is seated on her lap.

Goddess Skandmata has four arms, rides a lion and is seated on a lotus. She also holds a lotus in two of her hands, carries Lord Kartikeya with the third hand and blesses all her devotees with the fourth hand.

Legend about Skandmata’s incarnation:

As per legend, supreme god Shiva and goddess Maa Parvati’s first son, Lord Kartikeya, was also known as “Skanda”. Hence, Maa Parvati is often denoted to as Skandmata, which exactly means mother of Kartikeya or Skanda. Maa Skandmata is another form of Maa Durga and is believed to protect her devotees, as a mother protects her child from harm. She is a powerful goddess whose love and care assisted Lord Kartikeya defeat the demon Tarkasura.

Once upon a time, Lord Shiva was wedded to Devi Sati. But, when Sati sacrificed herself at the Maha Yagna organised by her father, Lord Shiva became angry and was left distressed. He decided to give up all worldly affairs and instantly went off into deep penance. Soon, a demon named Tarakasura began creating panic and trouble by attacking the other Gods. Also, Tarakasura had a boon that only Lord Shiva or his child could kill him. This was a cause of great fear as none of the Gods were able to defeat him.

Furthermore, on the appeal of all the other Gods, Sage Narada met Maa Parvati. He explained her the whole thing about her earlier life as Devi Sati and also revealed her about the purpose of her current birth. Sage Narada clarified that Maa Parvati would have an offspring with Lord Shiva, who would then go on to defeat the demon Tarakasura. However, in order to make Lord Shiva realize that she was an incarnation of Sati, Goddess Parvati had to perform deep meditation and penance (Tapasya).

She gave up food, water and performed hard penance for over a thousand years. Lastly, almighty God Shiva took notice of her devotion and agreed to wed her. When Lord Shiva’s energy combined with Maa Parvati’s, a fiery seed was produced. But this fiery seed was so hot that even Lord Agni, the God of Fire, was incapable to carry it. He handed it over to Ganga, who then securely carried the seed and placed it in “Saravana”, the “Forest of Reeds”.

At this time, the seed was taken care of by six sisters, who were known as Krittikas (mothers). After a long time, finally the fiery seed turned into a baby boy. Since, the Krittikas looked after him, this baby boy came to be known as Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. Soon, Lord Kartikeya was made the commander-in-chief of the Army of Gods and was given special weapons to defeat demon Tarakasura. Kartikeya then fought a fierce battle with Tarakasura and ultimately killed the demon Tarakasura and brought peace in the world.

Since, Kartikeya was born out of an effusing, heated seed, he came to known as Skanda, which means “effusing” in Sanskrit. And his mother, Maa Parvati, came to be known as Skandmata.
